Blue Jeans, inspired by Versace Blue Jeans (1994)

Blue Jeans opens with citrus and bergamot, made herbal by basil and given a licorice twist by anise. Lavender, carnation and geranium follow, softened by heliotrope and other powdery florals. Over time it slides into vanilla, tonka bean, sandalwood and amber. The top is fresher than in many comparable scents, but the base is unmistakably sweet.

About the original

Versace launched Blue Jeans in 1994 under its Versus diffusion label; retailers now sell it as Versace Jeans Collection Blue Jeans. The perfumer is usually credited as Jean-Pierre Béthouart. It was presented as a tribute to denim, with a blue bottle and Western-style cowboy imagery. It is often classed as an aromatic fougère and is reported to have been reformulated over the years. Versace does not list it in its current fragrance range, although retailers still sell new stock.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Versace stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Fans of 1990s aromatic scents will recognise the lavender and vanilla combination straight away. The powdery, vanilla-heavy finish divides opinion, so anyone who wants a crisp, modern freshie may find it dated.

It is not listed in Versace's current fragrance range, and we have seen no statement from the brand. Major European retailers still sell remaining or new stock.

Is Blue Jeans sweet?

The base is, thanks to vanilla and tonka bean. The opening is fresher and more herbal.
