Eau Sauvage
39,00 €
Edmond Roudnitska’s 1966 classical Dior masculine. Lemon, basil and hedione jasmine over rosemary, vetiver and oakmoss. The eau de cologne icon, rebuilt at 40 percent perfume oil.
The 1966 Roudnitska Classic
Edmond Roudnitska composed Eau Sauvage for Dior in 1966, and the result rewrote the rules of masculine perfumery. The novelty was twofold: first, the use of hedione (a synthetic jasmine note that had been newly developed) in unprecedented quantities, giving the perfume a translucent floral quality that no masculine had achieved before. Second, the deliberate restraint of the composition, treating men’s perfumery as eau de cologne territory rather than the heavier oriental masculines that had dominated the 1950s. Eau Sauvage became one of the most influential men’s perfumes ever made, and remains in continuous production on Dior.com almost six decades later. Our interpretation respects Roudnitska’s classical restraint.
How It Smells
The opening is crisp and bright, lemon leading with bergamot adding citrus lift and basil contributing a quick herbal green character. Within ten minutes the heart settles into the composition’s signature accord: hedione (synthetic jasmine) provides a translucent floral lift that distinguishes Eau Sauvage from every other classical masculine cologne, with rosemary adding aromatic depth, coriander contributing soft spice, and lavender threading through with herbal polish. The base is the perfume’s quiet anchor. Vetiver gives an earthy character, oakmoss adds mineral green depth (within IFRA limits in current production), and musk smooths the drydown. The overall impression is timeless masculine elegance, polished without trying hard, the gold standard against which all eaux de cologne are measured.
The Notes
Top: lemon, bergamot, basil.
Heart: hedione jasmine, rosemary, coriander, lavender.
Base: vetiver, oakmoss, musk.
How Our Version Compares
Classical eau de cologne compositions like Eau Sauvage benefit from concentration in a way that often surprises wearers familiar only with the original eau de toilette format. The light citrus floral opening can feel ephemeral in low oil formulas, fading within an hour. Our European Union production at 40 percent perfume oil concentration provides the body to extend the wearing significantly, with the hedione jasmine heart holding through the day and the vetiver oakmoss drydown lasting on clothing into the next day.
Common Questions
How influential is Eau Sauvage in perfume history?
Profoundly. It introduced hedione to perfumery on a major scale, a synthetic material that has since become one of the most used in modern perfumery. The translucent floral quality it brings was unprecedented in masculine perfumery in 1966 and is now standard across the category.
Is it still wearable today, or does it feel dated?
Timeless rather than dated. Eau Sauvage’s restraint and polish translate to current taste as effortless masculine elegance. Many young wearers adopt it precisely because it reads grown up and classical rather than chasing modern aquatic or sweet gourmand trends.
How does it compare to Eau Sauvage Parfum?
The Parfum (released 2012) is a richer extrait concentration with deeper rosemary and stronger jasmine. The classical eau de toilette (which our interpretation follows) is the lighter, more translucent original Roudnitska conception.
Best occasion?
Genuinely versatile. Office, dinner, daytime, evening. Eau Sauvage has been worn as a signature by everyone from Cary Grant to current French politicians for nearly six decades. The polish suits any setting that respects classical masculine elegance.
Will it last on skin?
Six to nine hours at our 40 percent oil concentration, significantly longer than the standard eau de toilette format. The vetiver oakmoss musk drydown clings to clothing well into the next day, giving the eau de cologne character genuinely serious longevity.
