Kyoto, inspired by Diptyque Kyoto (2021)

Kyoto opens with incense in front and a spicy, faintly gingery lift. The rose comes through quickly, but a beetroot accord pulls it towards damp earth, so it reads more like a rose growing in a garden bed than a cut bouquet. As it dries, ambrette seed makes it powdery and musky, with vetiver giving a dry, rooty base. The overall impression is quiet and slightly smoky.

About the original

Alexandra Carlin composed Kyoto for Diptyque's 60th anniversary in 2021, as one of five Le Grand Tour limited editions alongside Paris, Venice, Milos and Byblos. The theme was ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arranging, and the bottle came in tinted pink-purple glass with a furoshiki-style fabric wrap. Retailers sold it as a limited edition and it is no longer produced. It is unrelated to Comme des Garçons Incense: Kyoto, a cedar and cypress incense scent that remains in production.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Diptyque stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Opinion on this one divides. Admirers love the earthy rose, while others find the beetroot too vegetable-like. Fans of incense and offbeat florals will find plenty here; a sweet, classic rose it is not.

Incense leads from the first spray, with a slightly spicy, gingery edge.

Turkish rose forms the heart, and the beetroot accord gives it an earthy, root-vegetable tone that defines the scent.

Vetiver and ambrette seed take over in the drydown, which turns powdery and musky.

Is this Diptyque Kyoto or Comme des Garçons Kyoto?

It is based on Diptyque Kyoto (2021), the rose and incense limited edition. Comme des Garçons Incense: Kyoto is a different, woodier incense scent.

Does it really smell of beetroot?

Slightly. The beetroot accord adds an earthy, vegetal note to the rose, which some people love and others find too savoury.

Is Diptyque Kyoto still available?

It was a 2021 limited edition and is no longer produced, so only remaining stock circulates.

Is Diptyque Kyoto coming back?

It was a limited edition. So far, we have found no announcement from Diptyque about a re-release. Our version is an eau de parfum in 50 ml or 100 ml.
