Magnificent Gold, inspired by Yves Saint Laurent Magnificent Gold (2017)

Saffron gives the first moments a dry, leathery spice, lifted by the peppery sparkle of pink pepper. Vanilla moves in quickly and becomes the main thread, smoothed by sandalwood. The oud here is described as a white oud accord, so it reads clean and woody rather than smoky or medicinal. Musk carries the finish close to skin.

About the original

Magnificent Gold launched in September 2017 as part of the Collection Orientale of Le Vestiaire des Parfums, and fragrance press at the time reported Honorine Blanc as its perfumer. YSL said it drew on the architectural gold of the Orient, and the bottle was lacquered gold to match. The scent was marketed as unisex. It no longer appears on YSL's European, US or international sites and is sold out at Selfridges, though YSL still offers it in some Middle East markets. YSL's current Le Vestiaire scent called Gold is a different fragrance.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Yves Saint Laurent stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Its mood is polished and golden rather than dark. Vanilla is the main thread and it leans powdery, so a buyer hoping for a smoky, resinous oud may find it gentler than the name suggests.

The top is spice first: saffron with its dry, slightly leathery character and pink pepper for lift.

Within minutes vanilla and sandalwood fill the centre, creamy and rounded, with the white oud accord giving a clean woody frame.

The base settles into musk and oud, soft and skin-like, with the vanilla still present.

Is YSL Magnificent Gold discontinued?

It no longer appears in YSL's European or US ranges and major retailers show it as sold out. YSL still lists it in some Middle East markets.

Is it a smoky oud?

No. The oud is a white oud accord set against vanilla and sandalwood, so it comes across as clean and powdery rather than smoky.

Is this the same as YSL Gold from Le Vestiaire des Parfums?

No. YSL's current Gold is a separate scent built on tuberose, jasmine and ylang-ylang. This page is inspired by the 2017 Magnificent Gold with saffron, white oud and vanilla.

How does it relate to Magnificent Blossom?

Both come from the same Le Vestiaire des Parfums collection. Gold is the spiced vanilla and oud scent; Blossom is a separate fragrance, which we also make.

Is Yves Saint Laurent Magnificent Gold coming back?

So far, we have found no announcement from Yves Saint Laurent that it will return. Our version is an eau de parfum in 50 ml or 100 ml.
