Sotto Voce, inspired by Laura Biagiotti Sotto Voce (1996)

Orange blossom and cyclamen give Sotto Voce a light, petal-like introduction. Very quickly the flowers grow denser: tuberose and ylang-ylang bring a heady, slightly fruity richness, with orchid and rose filling out the middle. Heliotrope, a flower with an almond and vanilla scent, links the bouquet to the vanilla and sandalwood underneath. The result is powdery and sweet rather than fresh.

About the original

Laura Biagiotti introduced Sotto Voce in 1996, presenting it in a clear ovoid bottle with a gold baton cap designed by Peter Schmidt. Sources disagree on its notes, and some also mention peach and plum alongside the flowers. Sotto Voce is no longer listed among the ten fragrances on Laura Biagiotti's official site, and at least one large perfume retailer lists it as unavailable. The brand has not made a public statement about it.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Laura Biagiotti stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Its natural audience is women who miss the plush oriental florals of the late 1990s. Rich white flowers and a powdery vanilla base give it real body, so it is less suited to anyone after something clean or citrusy.

It no longer appears in Laura Biagiotti's official fragrance range, and the brand has not issued a statement. Some secondhand listings remain.

Is Sotto Voce powdery?

Yes. Heliotrope and vanilla give the drydown a sweet, powdery character that sources on the original also mention.

How does it compare with Roma?

Both are Laura Biagiotti orientals, but Roma is herbal and resinous, while Sotto Voce is a sweeter white-floral built around tuberose and vanilla.
