1970, inspired by Bella Freud 1970 (2014)

Rose and incense are wound together from the start, the rose lifted by saffron, which adds a leathery, faintly metallic spice. Frankincense and myrrh, both tree resins burned as incense, give it a smoky, church-like depth. Benzoin, another resin, smells of vanilla and balsam and smooths the edges. Blonde woods keep the base dry, so the overall feel is dusky rather than sweet.

About the original

Fashion designer Bella Freud launched 1970 in July 2014 at Harvey Nichols in London, as one of her first three eaux de parfum alongside Je t'aime Jane and Ginsberg is God. She created them with the perfume designer Azzi Glasser. The scent was inspired by the spirit of the 1970s and a night on a Formentera beach, and launch press called it 'the smell of incense in the warm night air'. Bella Freud also uses the 1970 name for knitwear and a scented candle, which are separate products.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Bella Freud stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Incense is the defining note, so it appeals most to wearers who enjoy smoke and resin in a rose. Marie Claire's reviewer found it warm with a crisp finish, settling into rose, patchouli and musk. Its resinous character may seem austere next to sweet or powdery florals.

Rose de mai and saffron lead, a spiced, slightly dusky rose with no dewy freshness.

Frankincense and myrrh build beneath it, smoky and resinous, with benzoin adding a balsamic sweetness.

Blonde woods carry the drydown, dry and pale, keeping the incense in focus.

Is this the Bella Freud 1970 perfume or the candle?

The perfume, the 2014 eau de parfum. The 1970 candle, which retailers describe with black musk and patchouli, is a separate product.
