Plum Japonais, inspired by Tom Ford Plum Japonais (2013)

Plum Japonais opens with dry spice: cinnamon first, then saffron, which smells leathery and faintly metallic. Under it the plum is dark and syrupy, pushed towards dessert wine by a liquor accord. Immortelle, a yellow flower with a honeyed, almost curry-like smell, and cypress give the middle a resinous tone. The finish is dense and sweet, with benzoin and vanilla wrapped around a thread of agarwood (oud).

About the original

Yann Vasnier created it in 2013 for the Atelier d'Orient collection within Tom Ford's Private Blend line. Some fragrance references file it under women's fragrances, yet it belonged to a range Tom Ford markets without gender. It is no longer listed on Tom Ford Beauty's UK site, and perfume databases describe it as discontinued. Articles in 2026 have speculated about a return, but we found no announcement from the brand.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Tom Ford stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Evenings and cold weather are where this spiced, boozy plum makes sense. It is heavy and sweet, and the liquor and oud base make a statement in a small room. If cinnamon or dessert-like richness tires you quickly, a lighter Private Blend will be the safer choice.

Cinnamon and saffron arrive first, dusty and dry, before the fruit has fully opened.

The heart is Japanese plum and plum blossom with a liquor note, layered with immortelle, camellia and the green resin of cypress. It smells like stewed fruit in a dark glass.

Amber, benzoin and vanilla build a thick, sweet base, with agarwood and fir adding a woody, slightly smoky depth underneath.

Is Tom Ford Plum Japonais discontinued?

It is no longer listed in Tom Ford's Private Blend range on the official UK site. Rumours of a relaunch circulate online, with no official confirmation so far.

Is Plum Japonais very sweet?

Yes, noticeably. Vanilla, benzoin and amber give it a sweet base, balanced by spice and oud rather than by anything fresh.

Is it a women's or a unisex fragrance?

Tom Ford sells its Private Blends as unisex, and Plum Japonais was part of that range, although some databases list it as feminine.

Is Tom Ford Plum Japonais coming back?
