Sauvage Parfum 2019, inspired by Dior Sauvage Parfum (2019)

Citrus comes first, mandarin and bergamot together. Within minutes the sandalwood moves to the centre: Dior uses a Sri Lankan note it calls dense and milky, and sets cedar beside it. Vanilla and tonka bean form the base, the tonka slightly bitter so the sweetness never turns sugary. The Sauvage outline survives, but its peppery bite gives way to sandalwood.

About the original

Dior launched Sauvage Parfum in September 2019, again with François Demachy as perfumer. He described it as an oriental fougère, warmer and woodier than the 2015 original. Launch information also listed elemi and frankincense, while Dior's current page names cedar instead, so the published notes have shifted over time. It remains in Dior's range in refillable 30 and 100 ml bottles.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Dior stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

A good pick for someone who finds the Eau de Toilette too brash. It is rounder and smoother, with less of the peppery edge. Vanilla is noticeable in the drydown, which may not appeal to men who want a completely dry finish.

How does Sauvage Parfum differ from the Eau de Toilette?

The Eau de Toilette leads with pepper and ambroxan. The Parfum swaps that for mandarin, sandalwood and vanilla, so it is softer, woodier and sweeter.

Why does the name include 2019?

To mark which Sauvage this is: the Parfum Dior released in 2019, not the 2021 Elixir or the Extrait.

Does it contain frankincense?

Launch information in 2019 listed frankincense and elemi, but Dior's current description does not mention them. We describe the notes Dior publishes today.
