Ted, inspired by Ted Lapidus Lapidus pour Homme (1987)

Pineapple and lemon arrive first, tangled up with lavender, basil and wormwood, a bitter herb best known from absinthe. The fruit takes a while to settle, and when it does a honey-sweet heart of jasmine and rose comes forward with a little incense and pine. The base is dense and old-school: oakmoss, patchouli, tobacco and musk over sandalwood and amber. It has been compared with YSL Kouros.

About the original

Lapidus pour Homme was launched by Ted Lapidus in 1987 and followed the house's earlier Ted Lapidus pour Homme of 1978 in style. No fragrance named simply Ted appears in fragrance database listings for the brand, but US retailers sell Lapidus pour Homme under the Ted Lapidus name and one gift set calls it Ted, so it is the most likely reference for this page.

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Ted Lapidus stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Honey, moss and tobacco make this a rich, unapologetically retro composition. Its style belongs firmly to the 1980s, and a buyer used to clean modern scents may find the pineapple and honey heavy going.

The drydown turns mossy and musky, with patchouli, tobacco, sandalwood, cedarwood, amber and tonka bean.

We take it to be Lapidus pour Homme (1987), the scent US retailers sell as Ted Lapidus or Ted. It is not the earlier Ted Lapidus pour Homme from 1978.

Is Lapidus pour Homme still made?

We have not been able to confirm whether Ted Lapidus still produces it.

Is it similar to Kouros?

Some wearers compare it with YSL Kouros. It has its own pineapple and herbal opening, though.
