Carlisle, inspired by Parfums de Marly Carlisle (2015)

Crisp green apple meets nutmeg and saffron at the top, so the fruit arrives already spiced. Tonka bean sweetens the heart, joined by rose, osmanthus (a flower with an apricot-and-leather tone) and davana, a herb with a boozy, dried-fruit smell. Patchouli takes over in the base, earthy and dark, softened by vanilla and opopanax, a sweet resin related to myrrh.

About the original

Carlisle launched in late 2015, first at Harrods, as a 125 ml Eau de Parfum released alongside Akaster. Parfums de Marly presents it as a masculine fragrance. The note list on the brand's site today differs from the launch version, which named bergamot, mandarin, violet, jasmine, guaiac wood and cardamom; it is not clear whether that reflects a reformulation or simply rewritten copy. The brand still sells it.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Parfums de Marly stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Its sweetness comes mainly from tonka and vanilla, and the patchouli base is dense, so it reads as rich rather than fresh. Men who find gourmand notes cloying should approach it with caution.
