Yatagan, inspired by Caron Yatagan (1976)

Yatagan opens with cypress, resinous and green, alongside absinthe (wormwood), a herb with a bitter, almost medicinal bite. Incense gives the heart a dry, smoky edge. Spicy patchouli then carries it into a dark woody base with a musky undertone. It is herbal and bitter at first, rougher and more leathery as it settles.

About the original

Caron launched Yatagan in 1976, and the composition is usually credited to Vincent Marcello. The name comes from the yatagan, a Turkish sabre. Caron describes it as a woody aromatic, while critics have noted its mix of wormwood, woods, moss and soft leather. Vintage bottles and the current 125 ml eau de toilette are reported to differ, following reformulations over the years.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Caron stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Bitterness defines it, and that is exactly what draws its admirers. It sits far from fresh or sweet mainstream scents, closer to dry herbs, resin and wood, and many people find the opening challenging. A crowd-pleaser it is not.
