Bergamote 22, inspired by Le Labo Bergamote 22 (2006)

Bergamote 22 starts with bergamot and grapefruit, zesty and a little bitter, the way pith tastes. Petitgrain, distilled from the leaves and twigs of the bitter orange tree, adds a green, faintly floral touch. Instead of fading away, the citrus is held up by amber and musk, which give it body, and vetiver dries the finish into something rooty and grassy.

About the original

Daphné Bugey composed it for Le Labo's first set of fragrances in early 2006. It was presented as a men's scent at the time and is now sold as unisex within the Classic Collection. According to the brand, its working name was 'Fire Cologne', which hints at the warmth under the citrus.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Le Labo stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

As a citrus with an amber and musk base, it carries more weight than a classic cologne while staying fresh. Spring, summer and daytime are where it is usually placed. Buyers after pure, fleeting zest may find it too rounded.

Bergamot and grapefruit lead, bitter-edged and fresh, with petitgrain adding a leafy, floral note.

As the zest settles, amber and musk move forward and give the citrus a fuller, rounder feel.

Vetiver closes it out, dry and slightly earthy.

It was presented as a men's scent in 2006, but Le Labo now sells it as unisex.

How is it different from a classic cologne?

The citrus top is similar, but amber, musk and vetiver give it a heavier, more rounded base than most colognes.
