Cherry Oud, inspired by Guerlain L'Art & La Matière Cherry Oud (2022)

Cherry Oud puts the fruit and the wood on stage together from the first spray. Guerlain describes the oud as 'lacquered' with red cherry, and that is a fair picture: a glossy red fruit over dark wood. Two roses, one Turkish and one Bulgarian, fill the middle and turn darker as the oud comes through. A leather accord at the base keeps the cherry from tipping into candy.

About the original

Delphine Jelk composed Cherry Oud for Guerlain's L'Art & La Matière collection, where it launched in September 2022 alongside Oud Nude and Oud Khôl. Guerlain cites the glossy red of Jeff Koons's artworks as the inspiration and says its oud comes from Bangladesh, near the Assam border. It is the only Cherry Oud in the Guerlain catalogue and belongs to the house's exclusive collection rather than its main lines.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Guerlain stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Oud admirers who find most of them austere may welcome the fruit here, and cherry lovers get something drier than a dessert-style cherry. Leather and oud are present throughout, so this is neither light nor airy. Anyone hoping for a light, playful cherry should note that oud sets the tone here.

Red cherry comes first, glossy and red, with the oud already showing beneath it.

The heart is rose, built from Turkish rose absolute and Bulgarian rose essence. As the oud wood rises, the petals lose their brightness and take on a deeper tone.

Leather settles in at the end, dusky and dry, and stays with the oud on skin.

Is Cherry Oud the same as Tom Ford Lost Cherry?

No. Lost Cherry is a Tom Ford fragrance, while Cherry Oud is Guerlain's and is built around oud, rose and leather. Both are in our range, which makes a side-by-side test easy.

Does Cherry Oud smell sweet?

The cherry gives it a fruity start, but oud wood, rose and the leather accord keep it on the darker side rather than sugary.

Does it contain cinnamon or cardamom?

Guerlain's official note list is oud wood, red cherry, Turkish and Bulgarian rose, and a leather accord. Some launch coverage also mentions cinnamon and cardamom, but Guerlain does not list them.
