Encelade, inspired by Marc-Antoine Barrois Encelade (2022)

Rhubarb gives Encelade its first impression, tart and stalky, closer to the raw vegetable than to a dessert. Underneath, a leather accord with a smoked, faintly animalic edge starts to show, and the contrast between the two is the point of the scent. Atlas cedar and vetiver add a dry, earthy frame. Later the leather softens into milky sandalwood and tonka bean, which give the finish a sensual, musky roundness without making it sweet.

About the original

Marc-Antoine Barrois launched Encelade on 1 May 2022 and states that it has never been reformulated. Quentin Bisch composed it, as he did the house's B683 and Ganymede. The name refers to Enceladus, a moon of Saturn discovered in 1789, and the bottle's sheath was decorated by sculptor-jeweller Jean Boggio. The brand describes it as a great green leather and reports FiFi Award finalist places in the UK, France and the US.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Marc-Antoine Barrois stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Leather is the backbone, so this is for someone already comfortable with smoky, slightly animalic notes. The rhubarb keeps it fresh and green at the start, and the brand still calls it powerful. The leather accord is described as smoked, which matters to anyone who dislikes smoky notes.

It begins with rhubarb, sour and green, cut with the dry woodiness of Atlas cedar.

The leather accord moves forward next, smoked and lightly animalic, with vetiver adding an earthy, rooty tone beside it.

In the base, sandalwood turns milky and tonka bean adds a gentle, almond-like sweetness, finishing on a musky note.

Is Encelade a leather or a green fragrance?

Both. Marc-Antoine Barrois calls it a green leather: rhubarb supplies the green, tart side and a smoky leather accord carries the body.

How does Encelade compare with Ganymede?

Both are by Quentin Bisch for the same house. Encelade centres on rhubarb and leather; Ganymede is a separate composition, which we also make.

No. There is a single Encelade eau de parfum, and the brand says it has not been reformulated since 2022.
