Eau Lente, inspired by Diptyque Eau Lente (1986)

Opoponax, a resin related to myrrh with a sweet, balsamic and lightly powdery smell, is the core of Eau Lente. Cinnamon wraps around it from the start, and red tangerine adds a small flash of citrus that keeps the spice from feeling heavy. Cedar gives the composition its pencil-shaving backbone. With time the resin and spice blend into one rounded, ambery accord.

About the original

Eau Lente was launched in 1986 and is usually credited to Desmond Knox-Leet, one of Diptyque's co-founders, together with Serge Kalouguine. Diptyque frames it around the smoke of spices and resins burned at night in the time of Alexander the Great. It is the house's opoponax perfume and exists as an eau de toilette. A Diptyque scented candle called Opopanax is built on the same resin but is a separate home fragrance.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Diptyque stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Eau Lente is aimed at people drawn to spice and resin rather than to flowers or fresh notes. Diptyque sells it as unisex. The cinnamon is prominent, so buyers who associate that spice with baking or Christmas may find it too festive.

Is Eau Lente the same as the Diptyque Opopanax candle?

No. Both are built on opoponax resin, but Eau Lente is Diptyque's eau de toilette, while Opopanax is a scented candle. We make a perfume inspired by each.

What does opoponax smell like?

It is a resin, sometimes called sweet myrrh, with a balsamic, honey-like and lightly powdery scent.
