Burdel

Burdel, inspired by Tiziana Terenzi Burdèl (2020)

Cumin defines Burdèl. In perfumery it has an almost sweaty spiciness that reads as skin rather than kitchen, and here it is paired with cardamom and a little bergamot. Underneath runs a woody core of oud and cypriol, an earthy root with a smoky character. Vanilla and ambergris round the base, but the animalic edge never fully disappears.

About the original

Note databases date Burdèl to 2020, and it belongs to Tiziana Terenzi's Anniversary Collection; retailers note that its bottles are labelled with the production year. The composition is usually credited to Paolo Terenzi. Published note lists run from gurjun balsam to Laotian oud. The brand's own page spells it Burdel, without the accent.

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Tiziana Terenzi stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Cumin divides opinion more than almost any other note, and in Burdèl it is front and centre. Lovers of animalic, spiced ouds tend to take to it quickly. Others may find the opening too fleshy before the vanilla and sandalwood settle it.

Bergamot flashes briefly before cardamom and cumin take over, with labdanum adding a dark, sticky resin.

The middle is woody and earthy: cypriol, guaiac wood and gurjun balsam, with lily of the valley as a thin floral thread.

Oud and sandalwood lead the drydown, sweetened by bourbon vanilla and rounded off by ambergris and musk.

Is Burdel the same as Burdèl?

Yes. Tiziana Terenzi's own page writes Burdel, while many retailers use Burdèl. Both refer to the same Anniversary Collection fragrance.

Does Burdèl smell of cumin?

Yes, prominently. Cumin is one of the first notes you notice, and it gives the scent its animalic, skin-like character.
