Sellier

Sellier, inspired by Byredo Sellier (2019)

Sellier smells of a well-used saddle: dry, slightly smoky leather with no sweetness to smooth it over. Black tea adds a tannic, faintly bitter edge at the top, and cashmeran, a musky-woody material with a dusty, velvety feel, keeps the leather from turning harsh. Tobacco leaf brings a dried, hay-like shade to the heart. Birch gives the base its smoky, tarry tone, and oakmoss adds a damp, forest-floor bitterness.

About the original

Byredo released Sellier in 2019 as part of Night Veils, its collection of extraits in 50 ml bottles. When the collection was relaunched on 2 October 2025, Sellier returned as Cuir Sellier in a 70 ml bottle with the same listed notes, so the scent is still available from Byredo. Wearers who have compared the two find the same formula, though Byredo has not confirmed this, and the 50 ml Sellier bottling is no longer made. The original version was known for a strong dye that could mark clothing, which the 2025 version reportedly reduced.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Byredo stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

A Santal 33 wearer who wants something darker and drier is the obvious candidate, and the two are often compared. It is austere and smoky, so anyone after a smooth, sweet or suede-like leather may find it too severe.

Has Byredo stopped making Sellier?

Not as a scent. Byredo relaunched it in October 2025 as Cuir Sellier; only the older 50 ml Sellier bottling is no longer produced.

Is Sellier the same as Cuir Sellier?

Cuir Sellier carries the same note list, and wearers who have compared them find the same formula. Byredo has not officially confirmed this.

How does it compare with Santal 33?

Sellier is often described as a darker, drier relative of Santal 33, with birch smoke and tobacco leaf giving it a rougher edge.
