French Riviera, inspired by Mancera French Riviera (c. 2022)

French Riviera opens on a spray of tangerine, orange and lemon, with ginger and pepper giving the citrus a little bite. Within minutes the sea arrives: an iodine note, the salty, seaweed-like smell of rocks at low tide, sits beside tiaré (a Tahitian gardenia with a creamy, suntan-oil quality) and powdery mimosa. Pine and vetiver keep the heart green and dry. It ends close to bare skin after a swim, with sea salt and white musk over a thin layer of amber.

About the original

Mancera, the house Pierre Montale founded in 2008, created French Riviera as a tribute to the Côte d'Azur and the Esterel coast. Retailer copy cites the 1969 film La Piscine as an inspiration, and the scent is usually credited to Montale himself. A newer Intense French Riviera, an extrait with oud added, followed around 2025 to 2026 and is a separate fragrance. This page refers to the original eau de parfum.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Mancera stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Warm weather and holidays are where retailers place it, and the whole composition leans that way. It is fresh and salty rather than sweet, with the floral notes kept in the middle distance. The iodine and sea-salt accord may read as briny to a wearer who expects a clean, soapy aquatic.

Sea spray and iodine take over the heart, salted and slightly mineral. Tiaré and mimosa round it out, while pine and vetiver keep a dry, green line through it.

The base settles into sea salt and white musk with amber underneath, more skin-like than resinous. Some retailers list cedar and ambergris here instead.

Is this the original French Riviera or Intense French Riviera?

The original Mancera French Riviera eau de parfum. Intense French Riviera is a later extrait with oud, built as a separate fragrance.

Does it smell like the sea?

Yes, in a salty, iodine way rather than a watery one. Sea spray, iodine notes and sea salt run from the heart into the base.

Is French Riviera sweet?

Only mildly. Tiaré and amber add some roundness, but citrus, salt and green notes do most of the work.
