Gntonic, inspired by M. Micallef GnTonic (2023)

GnTonic sets out to smell like the drink without using juniper. Bitter orange, lime, ginger and peppermint create the effect of a chilled glass with a twist of peel, while pink pepper adds a dry spark. Underneath, nutmeg and cedarwood bring spice and wood to lily of the valley and orange blossom. It begins cologne-like and slightly masculine, then turns smoother and more neutral as it dries down to vetiver, clean musk and oakmoss.

About the original

Sidonie Grandperret of LUZI is credited with composing GnTonic for M. Micallef, the independent French perfume house founded by Martine Micallef and Geoffrey Nejman. It came out in 2023 as part of the brand's Jewel collection. The gin effect is an accord rather than a gin note, assembled from citrus, spice and mint. GnTonic Virgin Edition is a separate, alcohol-free reinterpretation.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not M. Micallef stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Summer daytime wear is its natural setting, given the chilled citrus opening. It feels brisk at first and quieter later, with musk and vetiver underneath. Mint and ginger make the start quite bracing, which may not suit a wearer hoping for a sweet or floral citrus.

Bitter orange and lime come first with ginger, mint and pink pepper, fizzy and slightly bitter, much like tonic water.

Lily of the valley and orange blossom then move forward, with nutmeg and cedarwood giving the flowers a dry, spiced edge.

Vetiver, white musk and moss form the base, joined by sandalwood and amber in the final stage.

Is this the original GnTonic or the Virgin Edition?

It is inspired by the original GnTonic eau de parfum from 2023. GnTonic Virgin Edition is a separate, alcohol-free reinterpretation.

Does GnTonic smell of juniper?

No. The gin effect comes from citrus, ginger and mint, and juniper is not among its published notes.

Is GnTonic for men or women?

Retailers list it as unisex or as men's. It opens in a slightly masculine, cologne-like way and becomes more neutral as it settles.
