His Majesty The Oud, inspired by Atkinsons His Majesty The Oud (2016)

Lapsang souchong, the Chinese black tea dried over pine smoke, sets the tone from the first spray. Clove follows with a dry, nail-like spice, and cade oil (a tar distilled from juniper wood) deepens the smoke into something closer to a smouldering log. Underneath, oud gives a dense, slightly medicinal woodiness, while incense and leather keep the base dry.

About the original

Atkinsons announced His Majesty The Oud in May 2016 alongside a women's partner, Her Majesty The Oud, and first sold the pair at Harrods. The name refers to King Faisal I. According to the launch press, the oud used comes from Laos, and the tea accord was meant to suggest the leather saddles of Arabian horses. It belongs to the same Atkinsons oud line as Oud Save The King and Oud Save The Queen, but it is a separate and much smokier composition.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Atkinsons stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Smoke is the deciding factor here. Launch coverage called the result intensely smoky, and the cade and lapsang pairing reads more like a hearth than a perfume counter. Buyers who enjoy leather, incense and peaty notes will find a lot to like; those who want a floral oud should look at Oud Save The Queen instead.

The top is almost entirely tea: lapsang souchong with its cured, bonfire character, dry rather than sweet.

Clove and cade oil carry the heart. The clove is aromatic and a little numbing, while the cade adds a tarry, birch-like smoke that links the tea to the woods below.

In the base, Laotian oud, incense and leather take over, leaving a resinous, darkened finish with a faint animal edge from the leather.

Is His Majesty The Oud discontinued?

We have not been able to confirm whether Atkinsons still produces it.

How is it different from Oud Save The King?

Oud Save The King (2013) is built on Earl Grey tea, iris and suede, so it is lighter and smoother. His Majesty The Oud uses smoky lapsang souchong, cade oil and clove, and is far darker.

Is His Majesty The Oud for men?

Yes. Atkinsons launched it as the men's partner of Her Majesty The Oud, a separate women's scent.
