Mille Feux

Mille Feux, inspired by Louis Vuitton Mille Feux (2016)

Mille Feux is built on a pairing of tart raspberry and fine leather. Saffron arrives with the fruit at the start, giving the leather a spiced, faintly smoky edge. After a while iris comes through, a root note that smells dry and powdery, rather like cosmetic face powder. Osmanthus, a Chinese flower whose scent recalls apricot and suede, sits between the fruit and the leather.

About the original

Jacques Cavallier Belletrud, Louis Vuitton's in-house master perfumer, created Mille Feux for the first Les Parfums Louis Vuitton collection, seven eaux de parfum launched in September 2016 to mark the house's return to fragrance. The idea came from raspberry-coloured leather he saw in a Louis Vuitton atelier. It comes in Marc Newson's refillable bottle and is sold only through Louis Vuitton's own stores and website. Louis Vuitton first placed it in its women's collection, though the range is now presented largely without gender.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Louis Vuitton stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

The raspberry keeps the leather approachable, which may appeal to someone who finds leather scents austere. It is closer to a fine handbag than to a biker jacket. The fruit stays noticeable throughout, so a buyer after a dark, tarry leather would be better served elsewhere.

At first raspberry and saffron arrive together, the fruit tart and slightly jammy, the spice lending a smoky warmth to the leather underneath.

Iris rises after about twenty minutes and brings a dry, powdery texture, while osmanthus adds its apricot and suede tone to the heart.

Later the leather smooths out, with a faint haze of sweet raspberry still hanging over the base.

Is Mille Feux a women's or a unisex fragrance?

Louis Vuitton launched it within its women's collection in 2016, but the house now presents its range largely without gender.

Is Mille Feux a smoky leather?

A little, mainly at the start. Saffron and leather give the opening a smoky edge, but the leather is smooth and the raspberry keeps it from turning dark.

What is iris concrete?

A thick extract of iris root. It smells dry, powdery and faintly earthy, and in Mille Feux it appears once the raspberry has settled.
