Afternoon Swim, inspired by Louis Vuitton Afternoon Swim (2019)

Afternoon Swim is almost entirely citrus. Orange gives it a zest-and-pulp quality, while bergamot keeps the top line tart and faintly floral. Ginger sits underneath as a peppery tingle rather than a spice you would pick out on its own. Louis Vuitton speaks of 'immense freshness', and the scent stays light and sparkling instead of turning sweet.

About the original

Louis Vuitton introduced Afternoon Swim in April 2019 together with Sun Song and Cactus Garden, the house's first 'Cologne Perfumes', all composed by Jacques Cavallier Belletrud. Despite the cologne label, LV's French product page gives the concentration as eau de parfum. Californian artist Alex Israel designed the packaging, and the scent now sits in LV's California collection. Launch coverage listed mandarin among the notes; LV's current key notes are bergamot, orange and ginger.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Louis Vuitton stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Built around a summer day by the ocean, in LV's own framing, it belongs to hot weather and daylight. Woods, resins and a heavier base are largely absent, so it reads as a citrus scent from first spray to last.

The opening is orange and bergamot together, zesty and slightly bitter at the edges.

Ginger then gives a clean, peppery lift that stops the citrus from going flat. LV's US description also mentions mandarin, a rounder and sweeter peel.

Is Afternoon Swim a cologne or an eau de parfum?

Louis Vuitton sells it in its Cologne Perfumes line, but LV's French product page lists the original as an eau de parfum. Ours is made as an eau de parfum.

How does Afternoon Swim differ from Cactus Garden and California Dream?

Afternoon Swim is orange and bergamot almost throughout. Cactus Garden is greener and built on maté tea, while California Dream adds ambrette seed and benzoin for a balsamic finish.

No. The orange is zesty rather than sugary, and LV presents the scent as fresh and sparkling.
