Opus Xiv Royal Tobacco, inspired by Amouage Opus XIV Royal Tobacco (2022)

Cardamom and anise, along with elemi (a resin with a lemony, peppery smell), give the start an aromatic lift, and basil and bergamot keep it green for a moment. Tobacco absolute then takes over, dried-leaf and honeyed, joined by liquorice root and fenugreek, which smells like maple syrup. Beneath it all sit balsams and resins, with birch tar adding a smoky, leathery thread and oud adding depth.

About the original

Cécile Zarokian composed Opus XIV Royal Tobacco, which Amouage added to its Library Collection in late July 2022 as a unisex scent. The brand frames it as a route from Oman to Cuba, joining frankincense with tobacco. According to Amouage, it won The Fragrance Foundation (USA) Indie Fragrance of the Year among other awards.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Amouage stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Compared with lighter tobacco scents, this one is denser, more resinous and noticeably sweet. It feels rich and enveloping. Birch tar and anise may put off anyone who wants a clean tobacco-and-vanilla style.

Frankincense oil leads with cardamom and anise, while elemi and bergamot add a citrus edge and basil a green one.

Tobacco absolute sits at the centre, sweetened by liquorice root and prunol (a dried-plum note) and given a syrupy, savoury tone by fenugreek. Lavender, orange blossom, osmanthus and rose stay in the background.

The drydown is balsamic and smoky: Peru balsam, benzoin and labdanum with frankincense resinoid, myrrh and birch tar, over tonka bean, Madagascar vanilla, vetiver, guaiac wood, Assam oud and musks.

Is Opus XIV Royal Tobacco a men's or a women's scent?

Amouage positions it as unisex, and it sits in the Library Collection rather than the Man and Woman ranges.

Is it smoky?

Somewhat. Birch tar and frankincense give a smoky, leathery edge, but the balsams and vanilla keep the overall effect sweet and resinous.
