Orpheon Eau De Parfum, inspired by Diptyque Orphéon (2021)

Orphéon is built around tonka bean, which smells of almond, hay and vanilla and gives the scent its powdery heart. Juniper berry adds a gin-like, resinous lift at the top, while cedar lends the structure of polished wood. Jasmine sits inside the blend rather than on top of it, rounding the edges without turning it floral. The overall effect is dry and cosmetic, closer to a wood-panelled room than to a forest walk.

About the original

Diptyque released Orphéon in March 2021 to mark the house's 60th anniversary, and the composition is usually credited to Olivier Pescheux. The name comes from the Orphéon, a bar opposite the first Diptyque boutique that the founders used to visit, and the brand describes the scent as a portrait of a 1960s Saint-Germain jazz bar: tobacco smoke, powdery make-up and polished wood. The bottle illustration is by Giampaolo Pagni. The name has since spread to an eau de toilette, a solid perfume and body and hair products, but our reference is the original Eau de Parfum.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Diptyque stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Diptyque markets it as unisex, and it suits wearers who like quiet, powdery woods with a nostalgic character. Buyers expecting the freshness that juniper suggests may be surprised, as tonka and cedar set the tone more than the berry does.

Juniper berry opens it with a crisp, resinous edge, like the first sniff of a gin glass, set against dry cedar.

Jasmine then joins the cedar and gives the middle a fuller floral body that never takes the lead.

The base settles on tonka bean, almond-sweet and powdery, wrapped around the cedarwood.

Is this the Orphéon Eau de Parfum or the Eau de Toilette?

Our reference is the 2021 Orphéon Eau de Parfum, the anniversary original. Diptyque later added an eau de toilette under the same name, and our own version is an eau de parfum too.

Is Orphéon sweet?

Only gently. Tonka bean gives an almond and vanilla-like sweetness, but cedar and juniper keep it dry and woody rather than gourmand.
