Oud Palao

Oud Palao, inspired by Diptyque Oud Palao (2015)

Bulgarian rose leads, at first slightly green with a woody edge, and the oud stays measured beside it. Oud is the dark, resinous heartwood of the agarwood tree; here it reads as dry and smoky rather than barnyard or medicinal. Olibanum, the resin also known as frankincense, threads church-like smoke through the middle. Later the texture thickens into a semi-sweet blend of oud and patchouli with a leathery, tobacco-like smokiness.

About the original

Diptyque announced Oud Palao in July 2015 and released it that autumn as a 75 ml Eau de Parfum, composed by Fabrice Pellegrin. The published note list reads like a map, pairing each material with its origin: Laotian oud, Bulgarian rose, Madagascar vanilla, Sri Lankan sandalwood and Somalian olibanum among them. Diptyque's Oud candle is a different product, a home scent rather than a perfume.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Diptyque stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Wearers who already enjoy rose-and-oud pairings will find this one on the restrained side, with smoke doing more work than sugar. Diptyque positions it as unisex. The incense and leathery drydown can feel heavy to anyone who prefers clean, airy scents.

The opening is rose with a green, woody tint, quickly joined by oud that stays dry and controlled.

In the heart the rose turns creamy and olibanum brings a thread of incense, with cypriol (an earthy, smoky root) and cistus deepening it.

The base is oud and patchouli with Madagascar vanilla and sandalwood, semi-sweet and edged with a leathery smokiness.

Is Diptyque Oud Palao still made?

We have not been able to confirm whether Diptyque still produces it, so we make no claim either way.

Is the oud in Oud Palao harsh or medicinal?

It is kept in check by the rose, and most of the darkness comes from incense smoke and patchouli rather than a sharp, medicinal oud note.
