Oud Palao
49,00 €
A rich oud and rose inspired by Diptyque Oud Palao: Laotian oud, rose, and rum over tobacco and vanilla, rebuilt at 40 percent perfume oil, Made in the EU.
The Story
Launched in 2015, Oud Palao was Diptyque’s first foray into oud, and it remains one of the house’s most enveloping creations. It is built around Palao, a prized oud from Northern Laos, and inspired by the intricate Zellige mosaic tiles of North Africa, with each facet of the scent arranged like a piece of the pattern. The result is an oud that is animalic and rich yet kept elegant in the Diptyque manner.
How It Smells
This is a warm, sumptuous oud for cold nights. It opens with a smoky, slightly animalic Laotian oud wrapped in a full Bulgarian rose, the classic rose-oud pairing done with real depth. A boozy splash of rum and a soft tobacco leaf add a sweet, intoxicating warmth, while frankincense lends a spiritual smokiness. In the long drydown, sandalwood, patchouli, and Madagascar vanilla smooth everything into a rich, resinous glow. Bold but balanced, it fills a room without tipping into harshness.
The Notes
Top: rum, rose. Heart: Laotian oud, tobacco, frankincense. Base: sandalwood, patchouli, vanilla.
How Our Version Compares
Our interpretation rebuilds Oud Palao at 40 percent perfume oil, a far higher concentration than the lighter eau de toilette and eau de parfum sprays most people know, where the actual oil content is often only a small fraction of that. Made in the EU to careful standards, it is formulated to track the character you remember while giving you stronger projection and noticeably longer wear on skin. Because the oil load is so high, a little goes a long way: one or two dabs at the pulse points is usually enough for the day, and the scent unfolds slowly through its top, heart, and base over many hours rather than burning off within the first one. An oil based fragrance also sits closer to the skin and reacts to your own warmth and chemistry, so the way it develops on you will be subtly your own rather than identical to anyone else. If you want to stretch the wear even further, apply it to freshly moisturised skin, which holds the oils far better than dry skin and slows down evaporation. Storing it away from heat and direct light will also keep the blend smelling true for longer. This is an independent interpretation inspired by the original accord, blended in our own workshop, and it is not the branded fragrance itself.
Common Questions
Is this the original Diptyque fragrance? No. It is our independent interpretation of the Oud Palao accord, rebuilt at 40 percent perfume oil.
Is it unisex? Yes. This rich rose-oud is fully unisex, though its boldness suits anyone who likes a statement scent.
How long does it last? Oud, resins, and vanilla are extremely long lasting, and the high oil load makes this a deep, all-day presence. A little is plenty.
When should I wear it? It is made for cold weather and evenings, perfect for occasions when you want something rich and memorable.
