Santal Calling is built around sandalwood, which the brand specifies as Australian-grown Santalum album. A milky accord and a pinch of nutmeg come first, giving the feel of spiced hot milk. Iris adds a cool, powdery note, and cashmeran, a musky, woody material, a fuzzy texture like brushed wool. Vanilla and musk keep the drydown smooth and gently sweet.

About the original

Antoine Maisondieu is credited as the perfumer of Santal Calling, which Ex Nihilo describes as 'bright and soothing'. It comes in 100 ml and 50 ml bottles and a 5 x 7.5 ml travel set, and no reliable launch date turned up in our research. It is a separate composition from Le Labo Santal 33 and other sandalwood scents with similar names.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Ex Nihilo stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Sandalwood fans who like the creamy rather than the smoky side of the wood are its natural audience. It is smooth and comforting. The milky, vanilla-tinged drydown may feel too sweet to someone who prefers dry woods such as cedar or vetiver.
