Ruby, inspired by Kajal Ruby (2025)

Ruby opens with cherry and pineapple, a fizzy, tart-sweet start backed by red berries. Coconut and almond follow quickly and pull it towards the patisserie counter. Within minutes the fruit gives way to whipped cream, ice cream and brown sugar, with a faint powdery note alongside. Musk, vanilla, amber and benzoin, a balsamic resin with a vanilla-like glow, carry it to the end.

About the original

Kajal Perfumes Paris released Ruby on Valentine's Day 2025. It belongs to the house's Gem Collection, alongside Almaz, Masa and Topaz, although one retailer files it elsewhere in the range. Kajal was founded by creative director Moe Khalaf, who previously worked at Estée Lauder and Yves Saint Laurent. The brand does not clearly gender Ruby, so we treat it as unisex.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Kajal stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Retailers point to autumn and winter evenings, which fits its dessert-like density. Nothing about Ruby is understated: it is plainly sweet from start to finish, and the coconut and almond show early on. Lovers of fresh or dry scents should look elsewhere.

Cherry and pineapple lead, sparkling and tart-sweet, with red berries underneath and coconut and almond adding a milky, marzipan-like edge.

The heart is pure dessert: whipped cream, ice cream and brown sugar, lightly dusted with a powdery note.

Vanilla, tonka bean, benzoin and amber settle over musk in the drydown, leaving a sweet, resinous finish.

Does Ruby smell of coconut?

Coconut is listed among the top notes with almond, so it is noticeable early, though the cherry and cream accords soon take over.

Which Kajal collection is Ruby from?

The Gem Collection, according to Kajal's own site, with Almaz, Masa and Topaz. At least one retailer listing places it in the Fiddah Collection by mistake.
