Safanad, inspired by Parfums de Marly Safanad (2013)

Safanad opens with orange and pear, while petitgrain, distilled from the leaves and twigs of the bitter orange tree, adds a green, slightly woody bitterness. Orange blossom leads the heart, with jasmine sambac and the honeyed, banana-tinged richness of ylang-ylang. The base is velvety rather than heavy: vanilla and sandalwood with ambrox, a clean, ambergris-like note.

About the original

Safanad dates from 2013 and is usually credited to perfumer Fabrice Pellegrin, although Parfums de Marly's own page names neither the year nor the perfumer. The brand describes it as warm and velvety. It has been characterised as elegant and traditional in style. Some note lists also include iris or replace ambrox with amber.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Parfums de Marly stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Classic white-floral lovers are its natural audience: it is refined and composed rather than playful. The fruit is fresh at the start but brief, and the base leans sweet with vanilla. Those after a modern gourmand or a zesty citrus will find it too old-school.

No. Safanad is a white floral with fruit at the top and vanilla in the base, whereas Oriana is built around cream, marshmallow and praline.

Is Safanad very sweet?

Moderately. Pear and vanilla add sweetness, but orange blossom and petitgrain keep it floral and fresh.
