Rouge 540, inspired by Maison Francis Kurkdjian Baccarat Rouge 540 (2015)

Baccarat Rouge 540 is built in three layers that Maison Francis Kurkdjian describes as air, mineral and fire. Jasmine and saffron sit at the top, light and faintly spiced. Underneath, an amber-wood accord gives a dry, almost salty mineral effect, and a caramelised-sugar facet adds sweetness without turning sticky. Cedar keeps the base straight and woody.

About the original

Francis Kurkdjian composed it for the 250th anniversary of Baccarat, and the number refers to 540°C, the temperature at which the glassmaker produces its crystal. It first appeared in 2014 as a Baccarat exclusive in crystal bottles, before Maison Francis Kurkdjian released it as an eau de parfum (sources give 2015 or early 2016). Largely through social media, it became one of the best-selling fragrances in Europe and the United States. A separate Extrait de Parfum followed in 2017.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Maison Francis Kurkdjian stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Opinions on it split sharply. Admirers find it polished and luminous, while others notice a metallic, salty or medicinal edge and a sugary note they find synthetic. For an amber it reads airy rather than heavy, and its sweetness is one of the traits reviewers mention most.

It opens on jasmine with a dusting of saffron, airy and lightly spiced.

The heart is the amber and cedar accord: mineral, a little salty, with burnt sugar laced through it. In the drydown the amber and wood stay close together, the sugared note lingering over cedar.

On the Baccarat Rouge 540 Eau de Parfum, the airier original. The Extrait de Parfum (2017) is a different, nuttier composition with bitter almond, and we make it as a separate product.

Why is it called 540?

The name refers to 540°C, the temperature at which Baccarat crystal is made. The scent was created for the glassmaker's 250th anniversary.

Is it very sweet?

There is a clear caramelised-sugar facet, but it sits over amber, cedar and a mineral note, so it comes across as luminous rather than dessert-like.
