Amber Musk, inspired by AERIN Amber Musk (2013)

Amber Musk works with only three named materials: rose centifolia, amber and musk. The rose sits on the surface with a honeyed tone, yet it stays a detail rather than the subject. Beneath it the amber gives a velvety, rounded body, and the musk is what remains once the flower has faded. AERIN sums up the mood with the image of a fireplace on a cold night.

About the original

Amber Musk belonged to the first AERIN fragrance collection from the Estée Lauder Companies, presented in late 2013 and featured again in the brand's spring 2014 trio alongside Lilac Path and Ikat Jasmine. It is usually credited to Honorine Blanc, though the brand itself has not published a perfumer. Into the Gloss described it as a skin scent with a faint touch of rose. Two later flankers, Amber Musk Vanille and Amber Musk Pistache, are separate fragrances; this page refers to the original Eau de Parfum.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not AERIN stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Lovers of musk and amber will get on with it better than rose devotees, because the flower is faint. AERIN also presents it as a base for layering under its fresher scents, which tells you how understated it is meant to be. Its cosy, enveloping character fits the cold-evening image the brand gives it.

Notes: Rose Centifolia, Amber, Musk

At first there is rose centifolia, the cabbage rose of Grasse perfumery, with a honey-like roundness rather than a green, dewy edge.

Amber soon moves forward and takes over, giving a resinous, velvety feel that blurs the rose into the background.

Musk carries the rest of the wear. It is clean and smooth, and by this stage the scent reads more like skin than flowers.

Is this the original Amber Musk or Amber Musk Vanille?

The original AERIN Amber Musk Eau de Parfum from 2013. Amber Musk Vanille and Amber Musk Pistache are later flankers with their own formulas.

How much rose is there in Amber Musk?

Only a little. The rose gives a honeyed tone at the start, but amber and musk dominate, which is why Into the Gloss called it a skin scent with a faint touch of rose.

Can it be worn under other perfumes?

AERIN positions Amber Musk as a layering base for its fresher fragrances, so it is designed to sit beneath a lighter scent.
