Amber Absolute

Amber Absolute, inspired by Tom Ford Amber Absolute (2007)

Amber Absolute is built almost entirely from resins and smoke. African incense sits at the front, dry and austere, and the effect is often compared to the inside of a church. Labdanum, a sticky resin from the rockrose shrub, gives the amber its dark, leathery sweetness. Sandalwood and patchouli add body, and vanilla bean rounds off the edges without making it a gourmand.

About the original

Christophe Laudamiel created Amber Absolute for Tom Ford's Private Blend collection in 2007. It is known for a dense treatment of amber and incense. The original 50 and 100 ml bottling was withdrawn around the late 2010s and became scarce. Tom Ford has since reissued Amber Absolute under the same name in a 250 ml bottle, so the fragrance remains on sale from the brand.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Tom Ford stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Heavy and enveloping, it is a scent with a lot of presence. A lover of incense, resin and a bit of austerity will enjoy it most. On a warm day, or on someone who finds church incense oppressive, it can feel far too dense.

Incense opens it, dry and smoky, with the amber accord already glowing underneath.

Labdanum and sandalwood come forward next, resinous and slightly leathery, with patchouli adding an earthy shade.

Vanilla bean emerges late in the drydown, bringing a rounded sweetness that sits under the lingering smoke.

Is Tom Ford Amber Absolute discontinued?

No. The original 50 and 100 ml Private Blend bottling is no longer made, but Tom Ford still sells Amber Absolute under the same name in a 250 ml bottle.

Is Amber Absolute sweet?

Only mildly. Incense and labdanum dominate, and vanilla bean only rounds it off in the drydown.

Which version of Amber Absolute is this inspired by?

The 2007 Private Blend Amber Absolute by Christophe Laudamiel. We have not been able to confirm whether Tom Ford's current 250 ml edition uses the same formula.
