Ange Ou Demon, inspired by Givenchy Ange ou Démon (2006)

The name translates as 'angel or demon', and the scent plays both sides. Mandarin and white thyme give the top an herbal, citrus freshness, while saffron adds a spiced, slightly leathery edge. Lily and ylang-ylang then build a heady floral heart, opulent rather than delicate. Tonka bean, which smells of almond and vanilla, joins oakwood in the base, so the finish is rounded and sweet.

About the original

Givenchy launched Ange ou Démon in 2006, presenting it in a faceted, tear-shaped bottle the brand calls a talisman. Perfume databases credit Jean-Pierre Béthouart and Olivier Cresp with the composition. Several flankers followed, including Ange ou Démon Le Secret in 2009, and each is a different scent. Givenchy still lists the original eau de parfum on its UK and US sites.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Givenchy stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Evening wear and colder months are where it makes most sense. Opinion on it is split: the lily and ylang-ylang heart is dense, and the sweet base gives it considerable strength. A sample first is wise for anyone who leans towards airy, fresh perfumes.

The first impression is herbal and citrus: mandarin with white thyme, warmed by a thread of saffron.

The heart is a full bouquet of lily and ylang-ylang. Lily adds a cool, waxy floral tone, while ylang-ylang is heavier and faintly banana-like.

As it dries down, tonka bean and oakwood take over, sweet and rounded within a woody frame.

Is this the original Ange ou Démon or Le Secret?

The original 2006 eau de parfum. Le Secret (2009) and the other flankers are separate fragrances.

Is Ange ou Démon sweet?

Yes, noticeably. Saffron gives it some spice, and the tonka base adds a vanilla-like sweetness.
