Ysatis, inspired by Givenchy Ysatis (1984)

Ysatis announces itself with a burst of aldehydes and citrus, quickly rounded by ylang-ylang and a milky coconut accent. Tuberose, jasmine and narcissus then fill out the heart, with carnation and clove adding a peppery edge. Underneath sits a chypre base, meaning a structure of oakmoss and patchouli that gives florals a dry, slightly bitter frame. Vanilla, amber and a trace of civet, an animalic note, make the finish sweet and skin-like rather than clean.

About the original

Givenchy launched Ysatis in 1984, with Dominique Ropion as its perfumer. Like most perfumes of its age the scent has been reformulated to meet ingredient rules; perfume writers find the current version fresher at the top and less animalic in the base than gold-capped vintage bottles. Givenchy now presents it in its Les Mythiques heritage collection, describing it as a white-flower bouquet over patchouli.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Givenchy stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Anyone drawn to Givenchy's Amarige or to classic chypres will recognise the style. It reads formal and rich, more at home on a dressed-up occasion than in a casual setting. The powdery, musky drydown can feel old-fashioned to people who prefer modern, airy florals.

The opening is fizzy and floral at once: aldehydes, bergamot and mandarin over ylang-ylang, orange blossom and a little coconut, with galbanum adding a green line.

Tuberose and jasmine dominate the heart, joined by narcissus, iris and rose. Carnation and a rum note give it depth.

The base is long and layered: oakmoss, patchouli and vetiver for the chypre structure, with honey, vanilla, amber, sandalwood and musk smoothing it out.

Is Givenchy Ysatis still made?

Yes. Givenchy sells the eau de toilette in its Les Mythiques collection, although stock on its own sites has been intermittent. Older vintage bottles differ from today's formula.

Which version of Ysatis is this based on?

The eau de toilette, which is the version Givenchy sells today. A parfum extract was also produced in the past.
