Chance, Lifted into Citrus Green

Three years after the original Chance, Jacques Polge composed Chance Eau Fraiche as the first major flanker in the family. The brief was the same playful idea of luck and chance, but pulled into brighter and cooler territory. Lemon and cedrat sharpen the opening, water hyacinth replaces the original pineapple in the heart, and teak wood with vetiver grounds the drydown. The result reads cleaner and crisper than the original Chance, with the same patchouli signature underneath but rebalanced toward a fresher daytime profile. Our interpretation follows that fresher direction faithfully.

How It Smells

The opening is bracingly fresh, lemon and citron leading with pink pepper adding a quiet warm spice. Within ten minutes the heart settles: water hyacinth gives a clean dewy green floral note, jasmine adds creamier depth, and iris contributes a cool grey powdered quality that distinguishes Eau Fraiche from the standard floral citrus crowd. The base is where the perfume holds together. Teak wood gives a polished wood character that is rare in mainstream feminines, vetiver adds an earthy contrast, white musk smooths everything, and patchouli grounds the composition with a soft earthy depth. It reads cool, polished, daytime, and decidedly modern.

Eau Fraiche depends on a fresh citrus opening and a clean teak wood drydown, both of which can collapse in low oil formulations. How does it differ from the original Chance?
Eau Fraiche is cooler, crisper, and more citrus and green forward. The original Chance has a deeper patchouli base with more pineapple sweetness. Eau Fraiche is the daytime, warmer weather version of the same idea.

What season suits it best?
Spring and summer above all. The lemon and water hyacinth opening reads at its best in warm weather, and the teak wood drydown stays comfortable even in heat. In deep winter it can feel slightly thin against heavy clothing.

Will I be able to wear it to the office?
Yes, ideally. The clean fresh character keeps it professional and unobtrusive. One spray is enough for a working day; two reaches around a desk without overpowering anyone.

How long does it last?
Six to nine hours at our concentration, with the teak vetiver musk base lingering on clothing well beyond that. Significantly longer than the original eau de toilette format.

How does the projection compare to the original Chance?
Slightly softer at the opening because the citrus and green character does not insist on attention the way the original’s pineapple and patchouli does. After the first two hours, the projection levels out and the teak wood drydown carries the trail.
