Un Jardin Sur Le Nil, inspired by Hermès Un Jardin sur le Nil (2005)

Grapefruit and unripe mango give an immediate sour-green snap, closer to leaves and peel than to ripe fruit. Lotus and hyacinth add a cool, watery floral tone, and rushes and calamus a reedy, riverbank greenness. Underneath, sycamore wood and incense keep it dry, almost dusty, so it stays crisp rather than sweet.

About the original

Jean-Claude Ellena composed Un Jardin sur le Nil for Hermès in 2005, after visiting garden islands at Aswan where he walked through a grove of green mangoes. It followed Un Jardin en Méditerranée (2003) in the house's series of garden scents. Chandler Burr's book The Perfect Scent (2008) chronicled its creation. Hermès markets it to all genders and still sells it, in a refillable bottle designed by Fred Rawyler.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Hermès stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Heat suits it, and it is widely recommended for summer. Its sheerness and bitter green edge make it a poor pick for lovers of rich, sweet perfumes.

Lotus and hyacinth come through next, cool and slightly aquatic, with bulrush and calamus adding a reedy note.

It settles into sycamore wood and incense, dry and faintly resinous.

Does it smell of mango?

Of green, unripe mango rather than sweet ripe fruit. The note is tart and leafy, which is why the scent never turns sugary.
