Elixir Des Merveilles, inspired by Hermès Elixir des Merveilles (2006)

Hermès describes the opening as candied orange wrapped in chocolate, and the orange peel does come across glazed. Caramel and Peru balsam, a resin with a vanilla-cinnamon tone, deepen the heart, while amber adds a golden glow. Incense, oak, cedar and patchouli stop it becoming a pure gourmand, and the base finishes on sandalwood, tonka and vanilla sugar.

About the original

Released in September 2006, Elixir des Merveilles was the third chapter of the Hermès Merveilles line, after Eau des Merveilles and Parfum des Merveilles. Press and perfume databases credit it to Jean-Claude Ellena. It swapped the clear orange of the original for candied peel and added sweet, balsamic depth. Hermès still offers it as an eau de parfum.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Hermès stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Sweetness is the first thing to weigh up: it is sugary at the start, though less dense than a typical gourmand. It is often chosen for colder months, and the caramel and balsam may feel cloying to a lover of fresh scents.

Is Elixir des Merveilles very sweet?

It is sweet, with caramel and candied orange, but woods, incense and patchouli give it a drier edge. It is also more transparent than a heavy gourmand.

How does it relate to Eau des Merveilles?

It is a flanker of the 2004 original: richer, sweeter and an eau de parfum, with candied orange in place of the original's clear orange. We also make Eau des Merveilles.
