Extatic, inspired by Balmain Extatic (2014)

Extatic begins with rose set against nashi pear, the crisp Asian pear, and osmanthus, a flower whose scent recalls dried apricot. Underneath, iris adds a cool, rooty powder while night jasmine and the Sharry Baby orchid, a variety known for its chocolate-like smell, give the heart a faint cocoa shading. The base is quieter, with amyris (a pale, resinous wood), cashmere wood and a leather accord listed as Barenia leather.

About the original

Émilie Coppermann created Extatic, announced in November 2013 and launched in January 2014 as a Harrods exclusive before a wider UK roll-out in February. It was one of three launches made under Balmain's licence with Inter Parfums, an agreement that ended early in 2017. Intense Gold followed in 2014, then Gold Musk and Tiger Orchid in 2016. Extatic is not listed in the range of Balmain Beauty, the brand's current fragrance licensee, and is reported as discontinued by at least one major retailer.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Balmain (Pierre Balmain) stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Wearers who want a floral oriental with fruit at the top and woods underneath, rather than a vanilla-heavy one, are the natural audience. The base leans to soft cashmere wood and a light leather accord. Iris adds a powdery streak, and anyone who dislikes powder or leather in a floral should keep both in mind.

The drydown settles on amyris and cashmere wood, with the leather accord giving a dry, polished finish.

Is Balmain Extatic discontinued?

It no longer appears in the range of Balmain Beauty, which now makes Balmain's fragrances. It was produced under the former Inter Parfums licence, which ended in 2017.

How does Extatic differ from Extatic Intense Gold?

Intense Gold centres on jasmine, heliotrope and vanilla blossom over labdanum and amber, so it is sweeter and more resinous. The original Extatic has pear and osmanthus at the top and a woody, leathery base. We make both.

What is the Sharry Baby orchid?

An orchid variety known for a chocolate-like scent. In Extatic it sits in the floral heart beside iris and night jasmine.

Is Balmain (Pierre Balmain) Extatic coming back?

So far, we have found no announcement from Balmain (Pierre Balmain) that it will return. Our version is an eau de parfum in 50 ml or 100 ml.
