L'Ombre Des Merveilles, inspired by Hermès L'Ombre des Merveilles (2020)

Hermès describes it as a chiaroscuro, a play of light and shadow, and the contrast is easy to follow. Tonka bean brings a sweet roundness with its almond-and-hay character, while incense and black tea pull it towards something dry and shaded. Neither side wins outright, as smoke and tannin hold the sweetness back. What results is woody and resinous with a quiet glow.

About the original

Launched in early 2020, L'Ombre des Merveilles is an eau de parfum by Christine Nagel, presented in the Merveilles magnifying-glass bottle, coloured deep blue. Press described it as a woody-oriental, warmer and darker than the first Eau des Merveilles. Its name is close to L'Ambre des Merveilles (2008), which is a different fragrance. Some launch press framed it as for him and her, but Hermès lists it in its women's range.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Hermès stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Of the Merveilles flankers, this is the shadowed one, with more resin and a sweet tonka base. Incense is the note that divides opinion, and anyone who finds it heavy may prefer the salty Eau des Merveilles Bleue.

Tonka bean rises through the heart, adding sweetness with a hay-like, almond facet.

In the drydown the three notes merge into a woody amber, resinous and quietly sweet.

Is it smoky?

Incense gives it a smoky, resinous thread, but tonka bean keeps it from turning ashy.
