Eau Des Merveilles Bleue, inspired by Hermès Eau des Merveilles Bleue (2017)

A salty pebble accord sits at the centre, a mineral impression of stones still wet from the tide. Juniper berry adds a resinous, gin-like freshness on top. Patchouli gives the base some earthy depth, but the overall effect stays cool and translucent, with no sweetness to speak of.

About the original

Hermès dates Eau des Merveilles Bleue to 2017 and calls it the fourth fragrance in the Merveilles family, which began with Eau des Merveilles in 2004. Christine Nagel's idea was to move the Merveilles theme to the sea at dawn, starting from sea-wet pebbles. It comes in Serge Mansau's star-studded magnifying-glass bottle, here in blue. Some databases date it to 2016, but Hermès gives 2017.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Hermès stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Women who enjoy mineral, salty scents will recognise the idea at once: it smells of the shoreline rather than of flowers. With nothing sweet to soften it, a buyer looking for a fruity or floral marine may find it austere.

How is it different from Eau des Merveilles?

It is a separate fragrance in the same family. Christine Nagel built it around juniper, patchouli and a salty pebble accord to evoke the sea at dawn.

Is this the same as L'Ombre des Merveilles?

No. L'Ombre des Merveilles (2020) is a darker composition on tonka bean, black tea and incense, while Bleue is the mineral, seaside one.

Does it smell like a typical marine fragrance?

It is salty and stony rather than watery or sporty, and it carries no sweetness.
