Edouard Flechier’s 1985 iconic Dior oriental. Coriander, plum and pepper into tuberose, jasmine, cinnamon, on a deep amber, vanilla, opoponax and sandalwood base. Rebuilt at 40 percent oil.
The 1985 Femme Fatale Icon
Edouard Flechier composed Poison for Dior in 1985, and the result became one of the most polarising and iconic feminine launches of the 20th century. The brief was a dense spicy oriental for the confident woman of the 1980s, built around coriander, plum and star anise at the opening, tuberose, jasmine and cinnamon at the heart, and a deep base of vanilla, amber, sandalwood and opoponax. The composition arrived in a violet apple-shaped bottle that became as iconic as the perfume itself. Despite reformulations over the decades, Poison has remained in continuous production for forty years and continues to attract a devoted following. Our interpretation respects the original Flechier profile.
How It Smells
The opening is famously assertive, coriander leading with star anise adding aromatic spice, plum providing a juicy slightly fermented fruity character, black pepper contributing warm spicy bite, and orange blossom threading through with honeyed floral lift. Within fifteen minutes the dense heart unfolds: tuberose absolute takes a leading role with its heady creamy white floral character, rose de mai adds jammy floral depth, carnation provides spicy clove-like floral character, jasmine adds creamier white floral support, labdanum contributes balsamic warmth, wild berries add fruity edge, and cinnamon and honey deepen the spice. The base is the perfume’s iconic anchor. Vanilla provides warm gourmand depth, amber wraps the composition in luminous warmth, sandalwood and cedar add wood structure, vetiver contributes earthy support, opoponax provides resinous balsamic depth, and musk smooths the drydown. The overall impression is dense oriental femme fatale luxury.

How Our Version Compares
Dense oriental compositions like the 1985 Poison reward concentration because the layered amber-vanilla-opoponax drydown is where the perfume’s iconic character lives. Our European Union production at 40 percent perfume oil concentration preserves the depth, with the coriander plum opening sparkling cleanly, the tuberose jasmine heart holding through the wearing, and the amber vanilla opoponax drydown lasting well into the next day on clothing.
Common Questions
Is the original still in production?
Yes, continuously since 1985. Poison has been reformulated several times to comply with current IFRA regulations (particularly around oakmoss and certain musks), but the dense oriental character remains recognisably itself.
Is it still wearable today?
Classical rather than dated. If you appreciate the great 1980s oriental tradition (Opium, Cinnabar, Coco), Poison fits naturally. The composition divides current taste sharply: those who love it consider it iconic; those who find it heavy avoid it entirely.
Best season and occasion?
Autumn and winter, evenings especially. The dense spice and amber base reads at its best in cooler weather and lower light. Daytime wear is rarely flattering; the perfume wants the occasions that justify its presence.
How does it project?
Very strong. Poison is one of the most confident projectors in mainstream feminine perfumery, especially in the opening three hours. The 40 percent oil concentration extends the trail considerably; restraint with application is recommended.
Why is it considered iconic?
The combination of dense oriental spice with assertive tuberose-vanilla-amber in an unapologetic register defined an era of feminine perfumery. The violet apple bottle became as recognised as the perfume itself, and the composition continues to influence oriental feminine launches forty years later.
