Romance, inspired by Ralph Lauren Romance (1998)

Rose sits at the centre from the start, dewy and clean, lifted by citrus and a light prickle of ginger. Freesia adds a fresh, airy sweetness. Lily, lotus and white violet open the heart into something translucent and slightly watery. The base is a pale musk, given a little depth by patchouli and oakmoss, so it finishes clean rather than heavy.

About the original

Romance was launched by Ralph Lauren in 1998 and remains one of the house's core women's lines. The original eau de parfum is usually credited to Harry Frémont. Several flankers have followed, including Romance Parfum (2021), Beyond Romance, Romance Eau de Parfum Intense and Romance Elixir, all different scents. Some wearers feel recent bottles are lighter than early ones, though Ralph Lauren has made no statement about a reformulation.

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Ralph Lauren stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Easy-going and clean, this rose is a good fit for women who prefer freshness to drama. A deep, velvety rose it is not, and the white musk base may read as too soapy for some.

The women's. Romance Men is a different fragrance from the same line.
