Velvet Orchid, inspired by Tom Ford Velvet Orchid (2014)

Velvet Orchid starts with a citrus lift from Italian bergamot and mandarin before the florals move in. At its core sits Tom Ford's Black Orchid accord, here paired with jasmine absolute, and the brand's own description adds honey and rum, which give the flowers a golden, boozy sweetness. Sandalwood and myrrh form a resinous base that anchors that sweetness. It reads as a plush floral, rounder and less shadowy than Black Orchid.

About the original

Velvet Orchid launched in March 2014 in Tom Ford's Signature line as an eau de parfum. The brand presents it as a softer, more feminine relative of Black Orchid, sharing that scent's orchid accord but moving it towards honeyed florals. Launch coverage credits it to four perfumers: Antoine and Shyamala Maisondieu, Calice Becker and Yann Vasnier. There was also a Velvet Orchid Lumière flanker, a separate fragrance.

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Tom Ford stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Honey and rum make it noticeably sweet, so it appeals most to women who enjoy gourmand-leaning florals. Its myrrh and sandalwood base gives weight without the darkness of Black Orchid, though anyone who finds honey cloying may struggle with it.
