Black Cedarwood & Juniper, inspired by Jo Malone London Black Cedarwood & Juniper (2014)

Cumin is prominent from the first spray, earthy and warm with a skin-like quality, and chilli pepper adds dry heat. Juniper brings a gin-like, resinous freshness through the middle. Cedarwood then forms a dry, pencil-like base. The combination is dark and urban rather than fresh or clean.

About the original

Christine Nagel created Black Cedarwood & Juniper for Jo Malone London in March 2014, as part of the limited London Rain collection. Jo Malone described it as 'midnight rain', and it is reported to have later moved into the permanent range. The cologne no longer appears on Jo Malone's UK or US cologne pages, and one major UK retailer lists it as unlikely to return. A matching aftershave moisturiser is still sold under the same name.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Jo Malone London stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Not for the faint-hearted: the cumin is prominent, and some wearers find it off-putting. It works best in autumn and winter evenings, for anyone who likes spicy, woody colognes with an edge.

The cologne is no longer listed on Jo Malone's cologne pages and retailers report it as unlikely to return. A matching aftershave moisturiser is still available.

Is there a lot of cumin?

Yes. Cumin is the most noticeable note, especially in the opening.

Is this the same as Whisky & Cedarwood or Hinoki & Cedarwood?

No. Those are different Jo Malone scents. Black Cedarwood & Juniper comes from the 2014 London Rain collection.
