Hot Water

Hot Water, inspired by Davidoff Hot Water (2009)

Hot Water begins herbal, with wormwood (the bitter herb behind absinthe) and basil, before pimento takes over with a hot, peppery spice. That spice sits on earthy patchouli for most of the wear. The base turns sweet and balsamic through benzoin and styrax, two resins with a vanilla-like, faintly smoky depth. Despite the name, it wears gentler and rounder than expected.

About the original

Davidoff launched Hot Water in 2009 as a spicy counterpart to Cool Water. Olivier Polge and Domitille Michalon-Bertier are credited with the composition. A flanker, Hot Water Night, followed in 2012 and is a separate scent. Hot Water no longer appears in the fragrance catalogue on Davidoff's official site, which now centres on Cool Water, though remaining bottles still turn up at discounters.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Davidoff stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Casual autumn and winter days suit it, for someone who wants warm spice rather than freshness. The base is sweet and resinous, so wearers who dislike ambery sweetness in men's fragrance should approach with care, and anyone after real heat may find it milder than the name promises.

Wormwood and basil open it with a green, bitter herbal note.

Pimento and patchouli form the heart, peppery and earthy, and this is where most of the character sits.

Benzoin and styrax take it into a sweet, resinous drydown with a faint balsamic smoke.

Is Davidoff Hot Water discontinued?

It is no longer listed on Davidoff's official site and is reported to be out of production, though we have not seen an official statement.

Is this Hot Water or Hot Water Night?

The original Hot Water from 2009. Hot Water Night (2012) is a different flanker.

How does it compare with Cool Water?

Davidoff launched Hot Water as a warm, spicy counterpart to Cool Water, so the two go in opposite directions: Hot Water is spicy and resinous.

Is Davidoff Hot Water coming back?

So far, we have found no announcement from Davidoff that it will return. Our version is an eau de parfum in 50 ml or 100 ml.
