Jade Leaf Tea, inspired by Jo Malone London Rare Teas Jade Leaf Tea (2016)

Jade Leaf Tea opens with pomelo, a large Asian citrus with a bracing, slightly bitter peel. Behind it sits the impression of steeped green tea, vegetal and clean. Toasted sesame brings an unusual nutty warmth, and maté leaf adds a dry, grassy, herbal note. It stays fresh throughout, with the sesame giving it more body than a typical citrus tea scent.

About the original

The Rare Teas collection launched in April 2016 in 15 UK stores, a luxury line of tea-inspired colognes that also appeared in travel retail. Jade Leaf Tea took Japanese sencha as its starting point; its siblings were Silver Needle, Darjeeling, Oolong, Midnight Black and Golden Needle. A 75 ml Cologne in the brand's April 2017 press material, it was called a limited edition by one launch report though the brand's April 2017 press release does not use that term, and it is no longer listed by Jo Malone London.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Jo Malone London stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Green tea is the whole point, so it will please people who already like tea accords and savoury, slightly toasted notes. Nothing here is sugary. The sesame is unusual and may surprise buyers expecting a plain citrus cologne.

Pomelo comes first, tart and zesty, quickly joined by a fresh, leafy tea impression in the style of sencha.

The heart turns nutty and dry as sesame and maté leaf come through. One fragrance database also lists incense, which would explain a faint smoky trace late on.

Is Jo Malone Jade Leaf Tea discontinued?

It no longer appears in Jo Malone London's cologne range or archive collection. We have not found an official withdrawal date.

How does it differ from Midnight Black Tea?

Both come from the Rare Teas collection. Jade Leaf Tea is green and citrus-led, while Midnight Black Tea is darker, built on pu-erh tea with vanilla and labdanum.

Does it smell sweet?

No. The sesame adds a nutty, toasted note, but the profile stays fresh and green.

Is Jo Malone London Jade Leaf Tea coming back?

So far, we have found no announcement from Jo Malone London that it will return. Our version is an eau de parfum in 50 ml or 100 ml.
