Midnight Black Tea, inspired by Jo Malone London Rare Teas Midnight Black Tea (2016)

Pu-erh is an aged, fermented Chinese tea with a deep, earthy flavour, and that dusky character runs through the whole scent. Labdanum, a resin from the rockrose shrub, adds an ambery, slightly leathery richness. Guaiac wood brings smoke, dry and gentle. Vanilla absolute rounds the edges so the result feels plush and enveloping rather than austere.

About the original

Midnight Black Tea was part of Rare Teas, a luxury Jo Malone London collection that launched in the UK in May 2016. Its starting point was pu-erh tea, while Jade Leaf Tea took a green sencha direction. The brand's April 2017 press release listed it as a 75 ml Cologne. It is not a Cologne Intense and is absent from the 2023 Cologne Intense line-up as well as from the brand's current listings.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Jo Malone London stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Rich, ambery scents are its natural company, and fans of tea notes will find a darker take than usual. It is sensual and enveloping rather than fresh. The vanilla and resin add sweetness and smoke, which may feel too heavy for buyers wanting a crisp tea cologne.

No. It was sold as a Cologne in the Rare Teas collection and is not part of Jo Malone London's Cologne Intense line.

Jo Malone London no longer lists it among its colognes or archive scents, though we have not found an official withdrawal date.

What does pu-erh tea smell like?

Earthy and deep, a little like damp leaves and dark wood. Here it is softened by vanilla and amber.

Is Jo Malone London Midnight Black Tea coming back?
