Sole Di Positano, inspired by Tom Ford Sole di Positano (2017)

Shiso, the serrated Japanese herb with a flavour somewhere between mint and basil, is what sets this citrus apart. It gives the bergamot and petitgrain a green, leafy bite, with lemon and mandarin rounding them out. The heart turns to white flowers, ylang ylang and jasmine with muguet (lily of the valley) and orange flower, kept fresh rather than heady. Musk and a green moss note finish it, clean and faintly damp.

About the original

Sole di Positano joined Tom Ford's Private Blend Neroli Portofino Collection in early 2017, reportedly as its seventh scent, and takes its name from the Amalfi Coast village of Positano. Travel retail followed from April 2017. A lighter flanker, Sole di Positano Acqua, came out in 2019 and is a different product. This eau de parfum no longer appears on Tom Ford's official sites and shows as unavailable at several retailers, while Neroli Portofino and other Mediterranean citrus scents in the collection are still sold.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Tom Ford stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Daytime in spring and summer is the setting the collection was built around. Because shiso and moss keep it green and unsweetened, it may feel thin to someone used to amber-based summer scents.

Bergamot and petitgrain bigarade open with lemon and mandarin, and shiso leaf adds a minty, herbal greenness.

The heart is white floral: ylang ylang and jasmine absolute with muguet and orange flower, plus a little sandalwood.

Musk and green moss make up the base, smooth and slightly mossy.

Is Sole di Positano discontinued?

It is missing from Tom Ford's American and British ranges and shows as unavailable at several retailers. The wider Neroli Portofino collection, including Neroli Portofino itself, is still sold.

Is this Sole di Positano or Sole di Positano Acqua?

This is the 2017 eau de parfum. Sole di Positano Acqua is a lighter flanker released in 2019.

What does shiso smell like?

Shiso is a Japanese herb with a minty, basil-like smell. Here it gives the citrus a leafy edge.

Is Tom Ford Sole Di Positano coming back?

So far, we have found no announcement from Tom Ford that it will return. Our version is an eau de parfum in 50 ml or 100 ml.
