New Haarlem

New Haarlem, inspired by Bond No. 9 New Haarlem (2003)

Coffee is what most people notice: rich, dark and roasted, rounded out by vanilla so it reads like a sweetened espresso. Cedarwood gives it a pencil-shaving dryness, and lavender with bergamot and green leaves adds an herbal, faintly powdery layer that becomes clearer as it wears. Amber, tonka and patchouli make the base dense and sweet without turning it into dessert.

About the original

Maurice Roucel composed New Haarlem, which Bond No. 9 launched in 2003 as a tribute to Harlem and the Harlem Renaissance. The press release framed it as a thank-you to the rap and rock musicians who had bought the brand's early scents. Bond No. 9 describes it as a spicy coffee and patchouli blend. Reviewing it in 2005, Now Smell This found it sweeter and fuller than Angel for Men, though less cloying than the description suggests.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Bond No. 9 stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

One reviewer called it a sweet winter scent, and the coffee and vanilla make it a natural cold-weather scent. It is sweet, so buyers who dislike gourmands should be cautious, though Now Smell This found it less cloying than it sounds.
