Tuxedo, inspired by Yves Saint Laurent Tuxedo (2015)

Tuxedo is patchouli first and foremost, a dark, woody version of the material that anchors the whole composition. Violet leaf, bergamot and coriander seed give the opening a green, peppery lift. Rose, a lily of the valley accord and black pepper form a spiced floral middle, though the flowers stay in the background. Bourbon vanilla and ambergris round off the base, adding sweetness without turning it gourmand.

About the original

YSL launched Tuxedo in 2015 as part of Le Vestiaire des Parfums, a collection based on Yves Saint Laurent's couture pieces. Its reference point is Le Smoking, the tuxedo for women first shown in the Autumn/Winter 1966 collection. Juliette Karagueuzoglou, named on YSL's French site, created it, and the brand classifies it as a spicy patchouli amber chypre. A Tuxedo Extrait de Parfum is now sold alongside the Eau de Parfum.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Yves Saint Laurent stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Although we list it with men's fragrances, YSL markets Tuxedo as unisex. The vanilla rounds off its finish. Patchouli is the dominant note, so a buyer who finds it earthy or musty will not be won over by the florals.

YSL sells it as unisex. We list it among our men's scents, and some wearers describe it as slightly masculine.

Is this based on the Eau de Parfum or the Extrait?

This page is modelled on the original Tuxedo Eau de Parfum from 2015. The Tuxedo Extrait de Parfum is a later, separate release.

Is Tuxedo sweet?

Lightly. Bourbon vanilla softens the base, but patchouli and pepper keep it far from gourmand.
