There’s a particular kind of fragrance that doesn’t shout. Colonia Quercia was that scent. Released in 2016 as part of Acqua di Parma’s prestigious Ingredient Collection, this oakmoss-driven cologne took its name from the Italian word for oak, drawing inspiration from the ancient oak forests of Piedmont and the aristocratic families who walked beneath them.

Then it was discontinued quietly, the way Acqua di Parma tends to retire its most distinctive work. Authentic bottles now trade on resale markets for €200 – €400, often higher for unopened condition. Our interpretation brings it back: the same crystalline citrus opening, the spiced cedar heart, the deep oakmoss-and-tonka base that gave Quercia its quiet authority. €39 for a full 50ml of long-lasting Eau de Parfum.

The Story Behind the Scent

In Piedmont, oak trees are more than landscape, they’re inheritance. They mark estate boundaries, shade family gatherings, and live longer than any single generation. Colonia Quercia was Acqua di Parma’s love letter to that legacy: a fragrance built around oakmoss absolute, one of perfumery’s rarest and most expensive raw materials, sourced from the soft moss that grows on aged oak bark.

The result was a fragrance that managed something difficult – woody without being heavy, sophisticated without being severe. Wearable in the boardroom and at a country lunch in equal measure.

How It Smells

The opening is unmistakably Acqua di Parma: bright Calabrian bergamot, lemon, and petitgrain woven with a soft prickle of pink pepper. It’s that signature Italian sun-drenched freshness – clean, sharp, immediately recognizable.

What sets Quercia apart begins about twenty minutes in. Cardamom warms the citrus into something more complex, more grown-up. Geranium adds a subtle green floralcy. Cedar starts to whisper underneath. And then the oakmoss arrives – earthy, slightly damp, deeply textural – pulling everything down into a base of patchouli and tonka bean that feels almost photographic in its depth.

Top: Calabrian Bergamot, Lemon, Petitgrain, Pink Pepper
Heart: Cardamom, Cedar, Geranium
Base: Oakmoss Absolute, Tonka Bean, Patchouli

How Our Version Compares to the Original

We don’t claim this is identical, no dupe ever truly is. What we’ve built is a faithful interpretation of Quercia’s woody-spicy character: the same green oakmoss heart, the same warm spice-and-cedar transition, the same composed Italian elegance. Where the original was an Eau de Cologne Concentrée (which still left many wearers wanting more longevity), ours is built as a true Eau de Parfum at up to 40% concentration. Six to eight hours of wear on skin, longer on fabric. Many of our customers tell us it actually outlasts the bottles they kept hunting on eBay.

A note for fans

We’re referencing the original 2016 Colonia Quercia in the dark brown Art Deco bottle. Acqua di Parma later launched a “Quercia EDP” in 2019 under the Signatures of the Sun line — a different formulation that doesn’t capture the same character. Our dupe is built around the original.

Who It’s For

Quercia is a thinking person’s fragrance. It’s restrained, deliberate, more autumn than summer. Wears beautifully to dinner, to the office, to any room where you want to be remembered without being announced. Skews masculine but reads as elegantly unisex on the right wearer.

Pairs naturally with leather goods, linen and wool fabrics, and the kind of evenings where the conversation matters more than the playlist.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this exactly the same as Acqua di Parma Colonia Quercia?

No, we don’t make that claim. This is a faithful interpretation that captures the same scent profile and emotional character: the bergamot-cardamom opening, the cedar-geranium heart, and the signature oakmoss-tonka base. Customers who knew the original tell us it’s remarkably close, with significantly stronger longevity than the original cologne.

Why did Acqua di Parma discontinue Colonia Quercia?

Quercia was part of the Ingredient Collection, alongside scents like Colonia Leather, Mirra, Sandalo, and Ebano. After LVMH’s restructuring of the brand’s portfolio, several Ingredient releases were quietly phased out. The 2019 “Quercia EDP” replacement is a different fragrance under a similar name.

What’s the difference between the 2016 Colonia Quercia and the 2019 Quercia EDP?

The 2016 original (in the dark brown bottle) was an Eau de Cologne Concentrée built around oakmoss and Italian citrus. The 2019 reformulation under the Signatures of the Sun line is an EDP with a different note structure — many fans of the original consider it a separate fragrance entirely. Our dupe references the 2016 original.

How long does this fragrance last on the skin?

Typically 6 to 8 hours on skin and noticeably longer on clothing. The Eau de Parfum format outperforms the original cologne concentrée on wear time – one of the most common upgrades fans appreciate.

Where can I find the original Colonia Quercia now?

Resale markets only – eBay, fragrance forums, private decant sellers. Authentic 2016 bottles in the brown Art Deco flacon typically sell for €200 – €400, sometimes higher for unopened condition. Our €39 alternative captures the same scent without the hunt or the gamble on authenticity.
